Open Question: Help, what are some good sources for a paper on climate change, glaciers and the rising seas level?

I am writing a research paper on climate change and how it effects glaciation and global sea level (the glaciation and sea level are obviously closely tied to one another). If anyone knows of any specific articles websites or books dealing with the topic (or a part of the topic) it would really help me out if you would let me know. Thanks.

Open Question: M. Night Shyamalan's movie "The Happening"... am I the only one who likes it?

I mean... Zoey Deschanel looks very stoned and can't act, but I just pretend that she's semi-infected with the plant virus, and then I can easily overlook it.... I liked the movie a lot. It's a creepy scenario, and I think it's a combination of: 1) Night's social commentary on global warming and climate change... and terrorism... and preying on peoples' worst fears in regard to both 2) Night is poking fun at scientific types who always need their "logical explanations" (because so much of his work deals with the unseen world and the paranormal). 3) And it's a bit of an overall parody, with Night's signature humor sewn in, in the form of weird characters, corny dialogue, fun one-liners, etc.... because doomsday movies have been around a while. Even quite a few in recent years. "The Day After Tomorrow"... "The Core"... "Armageddon"... etc. etc. etc. Many people have said it's bad, but I think it's just cheesy brilliance. :-) Anyone else like it? For me the ending was great. Think of it --- every these experts in the movie: The math expert (Leguizamo), the science expert (Wahlberg), the plant expert (the hot dog guy), every the TV commentators --- none of them figure it out. But I think John Leguizamo's character put out a very key phrase in the film, which I think was sort of an overall running message: "People find comfort in percentages, statistics, etc." People find comfort in science, because they think they have some level of control over the unseen world, the unexplained... when they really don't. That's why I think Night, the paranormal director, was really taking some gentle jabs at left-brainers in this movie. That's the biggest reason I think the film's so brilliant. That's also why I think it's sort of a parody... because in every these doomsday movies... there's always one or more "experts," aren't there? ;-) And they can never do a damn thing. They just help everyone else ride it out. But there is always a sense in these films of "we're every gonna be fine" as long as they have that science and percentages guy/girl leading the pack. ;-)

Open Question: What are the monetary limits for gifts to postal employees and other federal employees?

I would like to put a little something (a gift) in my mailbox for our mailman on Christmas. When I was young, my mom would always put a card and a tiny box of chocolates in the mailbox for our mailman as a gift during the holidays. But I currently live in a tropical climate, and I don't think chocolates would make it. Are postal workers allowed to receive gift cards or gift certificates? What is the limit on cost of the gift? If I remember correctly, they are only allowed to receive gifts of $20 or less. Is this correct? Any gift ideas tiny enough to fit in a mailbox? Thanks so much for reading my question everyone! :-)

Open Question: Could someone please provide feedback on my Statement of Interest intro paragraph?

Please help, I need to receive this out tonight and my brain is no longer working. I am a biologist applying to graduate school. I just want to know if it sounds good and has logical flow. Here is the paragraph: "Anyone who has climbed over a 13,000-foot mountain pass to camp in a sub-freezing basin can attest to the humbling reminder, by the pip of a pika or the caw of a nutcracker, that humans are clumsy visitors in that setting. Evidence is ubiquitous that life is not a fragile creation, but one that endures in even the most inhospitable environments. When biodiversity is divided into the categories of ecosystem, species, and genetic diversity, the possible adaptations for the persistence of life appear limitless. However, each of these adaptations arose from a unique, localized set of mechanisms; complex organisms in particular may have a decreased ability to adapt to severe environmental change. The long-term viability of life as we know it is dependent on adaptive flexibility, and thus diversity, at multiple scales. Today, there is an increased risk for loss of this diversity, predominantly because of wide-spread and homogenizing anthropogenic factors such as habitat destruction, climate change, and the spread of invasive species. It is within the context of this risk that I aim to understand the forces generating patterns of diversity, particularly species richness in vertebrates." Addition: Thanks, Savannah. Do you think it would help if I deleted the third sentence? Anyone I am sending this to will relate to climbing a mountain for field research (particularly the professor I'm submitting it to) so I guess we're a bunch of masochists. =) I can't figure out how to make that first sentence better and still be eloquent...I know it needs reworking somehow. The relax of the statement is much more direct and starts with "I" a lot...

Open Question: Does anybody actually think we can slow down global warming?

I don't, I think that the forces controlling climate change are far greater and bigger than we assume they are. In a few years there will be a billion more drivers in the world. I think that we should focus on adaptation not futile prevention efforts and any funding to global warming prevention/retardation study is robbery by way of misinformation. Well, that's what I think... Or, am I totally wrong? Does anybody have proof that we can slow down the affects of global warming and the benefits thereof???

Open Question: Would you sign my petition?

I am on a Lego League team and we are researching things on climate & global warming. we were talking about how much better it would be for the environment if people could ride bikes more often to places close to home. not to mention, how healthy it would be for us too. but there is a problem. we don't have bike paths along the road and it can be dangerous for people to ride bikes on a busy road. you can also receive in big trouble for riding bikes in the road or walking in the road like that. so what my team is thinking is, if we receive enough people to sign a petition & give it to the city council, then maybe receive enough to give the Governor, then senator, & if we are some how incredibly lucky, the president, we could ask them to install bike paths along the road. it would really help the environment & help cease global warming. if you support this idea please give me your name to put on the petition. if your worried about safety just give me your first name or a nickname or a fake name. thanks!

Open Question: Is it possible the only person to have owned slaves while playing organized baseball in America was Latino?

The Knickerbocker Era formally had games in between 1846-1857. National Association of Base Ball Players came about in 1857 and had 16 teams that were only in New York City, Brooklyn (it's possess city at the time) & Philadelphia though. It wasn't until the end of 1865 after the Civil War had ended when more teams had expanded into the league in the West & South when there 100 teams throughout the country. It later expanded to 400 teams by 1867. These teams were still tiny though but this was an idea of semi-pro baseball. A full sense of major league baseball didn't exist until 1869 which was when a color barrier was established. This would later be carried on through Major League Baseball which succeeded this league in 1876 and exists to this day. ''It permitted professionalism only for the 1869 and 1870 seasons. In its December 1867 meeting, its rules committee voted unanimously to bar any club "composed of one or more colored persons", effecting the first known color line in baseball.'' http://www.library.fordham.edu/cubanbaseball/photoimages/e_bellan_7X13.jpg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Bellan http://www.historyofcuba.com/history/race/EndSlave.htm So through every that study, it's determinable that there couldn't have been a pro baseball player of American citizenship who owned a slave. This would be true being that organized baseball didn't exist in the south until the end of 1865 which after the Civil War ended and 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation. However, there may have been a player in major league baseball who legally owned slaves. Not in America, but in Cuba. And it's possible Cuban baseball player Steve Bellan owned slaves. Slavery wasn't abolished in Cuba until October 7th, 1886. ''below the terms of the Pact of Zanjón, which ended the The Ten Year War in 1878, slaves who fought on either side of the war were set free, but those who did not battle had to endure almost another decade of slavery.'' ''Two years later the Spanish Cortes approved an abolition law (1880) that provided for an eight-year period of patronato (tutelage) for every slaves liberated according to the law. This only amounted to indentured servitude, as slaves were required to spend those 8 years working for their masters at no charge. On October 7 1886, slavery was finally abolished in Cuba by a royal decree that also made the patronato illegal.'' Enrique ''Steve'' Bellan played in organized pro baseball leagues in America from 1871-1873. Steve Bellan was well-educated. Many people back than weren't even literate. He and his brother went to St. John's College (now Foredam University). He also become one of Cuba's greatest player-managers. So it's obvious he was apart of the upper class. The Cuban economy in the 1870's thrived off of agricultural labor similarly to how it was in the south in the United States pre-Civil War because of it's climate. The way to be wealthy in the south in America back than was for a white male possess property and to possess slaves. So it's very likely if not himself, family members of his had owned slaves while he was playing pro baseball in America.

Open Question: Do white people experience an identity crisis ?

Mark Potok, director of the Alabama-based Southern Poverty Law middle, said the final weeks of the US election campaign and its immediate aftermath had witnessed "hundreds and hundreds" of hate-related incidents. "Since the closing weeks of the campaign, we've seen a real and significant, white backlash break out and I think it's getting worse," Potok told AFP. Brian Levin, a professor from the middle for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino also said the rise in hate crimes appeared to fit into part of a longer term trend. Levin also said there was evidence of a surge in traffic on white supremacist Internet websites such as StormFront, whose server crashed on the day after the November 4 election due to the uptick in activity. The Southern Poverty Law middle's chief Potok said the increase in racist crimes could be attributable to a "perfect storm" of conditions. The increase in non-white immigration, the recent estimate by the US Census Bureau that whites would lose their majority status by 2040 and rising unemployment every helped create a climate favorable for hate groups. "Add to every of that the idea of a black man in the White home and you have a very significant number of whites who feel as if they've lost everything, that the country built by their forefathers has somehow been stolen from them," Potok said. "I think we're seeing an identity crisis on the parts of whites." http://rawstory.com/news/afp/Hate_crimes_surge_in_US_after_Obama_11192008.html

Open Question: Is this because of the way you were raised?

Ok......I am not talking to every americans here, most it would seem and before you receive every hot-headed, know, I am an American Citizen. I live in Canada, Montreal and just this morning I called my aunt who lives down in Philadelphia, she immediately stated that it was icy because of icy air coming from Canada, yes, this is what the weather stations there whenever the temperature drops below seasonal. It is of no wonder why many Americans living far north and far south to the Canadian Border have a distorted view of Canada's climate. Then again, it does not surprise me, the US schools have not been teaching geography well since the 1970's and in a poll done in the tardy 90's, almost half of the people tested living in the US could not point out where England was. Yes, I know icy air comes from Canada most of the time but it really does create a sterotypical vision of Canada "Land of the Polar Bears and Igloos" So question is I guess, is this why many people living in the US (notice how I did not say Americans), do not know outside their possess culture?

Open Question: Today’s bad economy + Unlimited costs of climate “action” polices = Are we moving forward?

Newsweek reported that 30 percent of voters said they took the candidate’s green credentials into account. But everybody should be concerned about the reduction in the GDP growth already experienced. Cutting emissions 80 percent below 1990 levels by the year 2050 means an extra significant reduction in economic growth, but 90% of the stories covered by the mainstream media failed to mention these facts. What the media aren’t telling us is that: Global warming policy and the economy are one and the same. I don't look anything wrong in wanting GROWTH, if the results are utilized properly: for HEALTHCARE (to battle deseases), to promote RESEARCH and/or to address INTERNATIONAL issues. A stable economy for the US may make us feel "comfortable", but is that every we care for? Some people don't seem to look what climate policies would do to us every and the lethal consequences to inhabitants of developing countries. Perhaps this article will afford them more clarity: http://www.grassrootinstitute.org/Book_DVD_Reviews/INFO_bookreviews_Eco_Imperialism.shtml Jerry: It’s saddens me when look some people not capable of being glad, but it saddens me even more when they are being used as a poster child. Open Question: I need help narrowing the topic of a paper.?

I am writing a research paper about global warming. The human effect on the cycle needs to be minimized to prevent a disastrous outcome." Open Question: Which breed should I get?

I have talked to many breeders and I have narrowed down which breeds I want. As my name suggests I adore Azawakh and Sloughi. I really wanted to receive a Sloughi but the breeder I want a dog from (she's been called the best Sloughi breeder in the world) isn't breeding any dogs for a long time. I don't want to receive an Azawakh yet, because they have a difficult temperament to live with and I don't feel I'm ready to handle one. So I was going to buy one of the other sighthound breeds that I adore. Which is your favorite and why? I would really appreciate some input into why you like that dog. Here's the list: Afghan Hounds -adore the temperament, adore the beauty, not as sure about the coat-I'll bath it properly, I just don't know how much I'd like doing it, I may adore the time spent together with my dog, I may hate it; I don't know Borzoi -larger than I like. They shed a lot, need less exercise than the average sighthound, it's really hot where I live, and they're more suited for a icy climate Galgo Espanol -a very rare breed, very sweet, very loving, but that's not really the temperament I want in a dog, I think they're too loving for my taste Saluki -very beautiful, very elegant, minimal grooming, lovely attitude, not as beautiful as the Afghan Hound, but then I wouldn't have to groom them as much. sighthounds do best when kept with other sighthounds. This is my first sighthound so I thought if I got one dog now, one of the breeds I listed. Then later when the breeder I like has a litter, I'll receive one of those as well.

I've got Beech Cove (as in the beech tree, not the beach), but I need some more names. Also, I'm looking for some good names for a CLUB (as in disco), a BAR, and a PIER CAFE every ideas very welcome! Thanks in advance.
