http://nsidc.org/data/seaice_index/images/daily_images/N_stddev_timeseries.png Arctic Ice levels have now returned to normal levels, well withing a +/- 2std dev range. Ice levels have been increasing every year since the lows in 2007. Does this return to normal levels of polar ice show once again that climate models were wrong? Remember, some climate computer models showed the polar cap to be ice free by 2013. Should there be a greater concern that the Earth is starting to enter a new ice age?

Resolved Question: Walls in the first floor of my house are very damp. What can I do so that wallperpers won't fall?

Hi everybody! I'd thankful to anybody to advise me something: the walls of the first floor of my home are wet beacause of my location close water+the climate is also wet, foggy at my place. I put(stick) wallperpers on the walls again and again but after some time the platers pours with sewer and the wallpepers are falling. Maybe it's better to paint the walls but since the plaster does not remain on the walls the paint won't also stay on the wall surface for a long time. If someone knows something about it please advise me anything BUT I the way out of this situation must be cheap.I'm sorry but I can't afford buying any expensive building materials for this purpose. Thanks! Bye.

Open Question: Isn't it 'very likely' that an airplane won't crash?

Our resident denier 'top answerer' states "I wonder how many people would receive on a plane where the FAA stated that this plane was "very likely" to be safe, or imagine a truck driver who had to cross a bridge who's posted weight limit was "very likely" safe to cross?" These seem like true statements. Planes don't accident often, but sometimes do, and it is indeed very likely that they're safe. Same thing for the bridge example. Just because the FAA doesn't state the plane is 'very likely' safe doesn't change the fact that it is indeed 'very likely' safe. Are global warming deniers penalizing climate scientists for being accurate and precise (as 'very likely' corresponds to 90+% probability)?

Open Question: Here's a flashback for you: Do you guys remember global warming?

Why aren't people talking about climate change anymore? The world was heating up and we were every going to die. Wouldn't it be weird if the people who said that were wrong? (Like I predicted that they were in my thesis paper for my environmental geography class two years ago.) Now a lot of the people who believed in it just quit talking about it, like it was a one night stand with their sister-in-law. What do you think? "big amounts of a powerful greenhouse gas are bubbling up from a long-frozen seabed north of Siberia, raising fears of far bigger leaks that could stoke global warming, scientists said." Methane bubbling up from a LONG FROZEN seabed? That's obviously anthropogenic.

Open Question: Is the Obama WH going for "big bang" strategy part deux?? Cap&Trade, National ID Card, Healthcare?

Cap &Trade IS BACK. National ID card IS BACK. Personal attacks on insurance companies and republicans to distract from the lack of reform in your healthcare "reform" bill............well that never really left. Is this Obama's attempt at "big bang" pt 2?? (Also, I've noticed how the healthcare debate has devolved into a discussion on abortion and the use of reconcilliation...........at least we're not talking about the individual mandate, right?? lol) http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20100309/pl_nm/us_climate_usa President Barack Obama will corral on Tuesday key Republican and Democratic senators whose support is critical for passing a climate change law, seeking to jump-start stalled efforts to overhaul energy policy. Obama called the White home meeting with top lawmakers and members of his cabinet to reinvigorate one of his policy priorities, which even his advisers admit has suffered from the president's intense focus on healthcare reform. http://www.csmonitor.com/Commentary/the-monitors-view/2010/0309/Immigration-reform-rests-on-a-national-worker-ID It is this corrosive wearing away of the rule of law in America that should be a prime concern as President Obama launches a new effort this month to fix the nation’s broken immigration system. Mr. Obama faces rising pressure from Hispanic activists to fulfill a campaign promise for “comprehensive” reform. They plan a big rally in Washington March 21 to demand action. They know that any bill must start moving through Congress by May to stand a chance of passage this year.............The idea is to require a national ID card for legal workers using the latest technology in preventing fraud, such as biometric data about a person’s fingerprints or the veins on the backs of hands. It would be a different nice of identification system than already exists with a Social Security card or with the federal effort since 2005 to standardize state driver’s licenses. And it would either supplant or supplement a current system called E-Verify, in which employers can check an applicant’s status through a federal database.

Open Question: New Met Office study finds humans are 'very likely' causing climate change - what are your thoughts?

"The review studies developments in climate science since the last IPCC report (AR4) was published in 2007. Sophisticated ‘detection and attribution’ methods have been used to identify long-term changes in our climate" Temperature increase — global temperatures have increased by about 0.75 °C over the past century and 2000-2009 was the warmest decade on record. Human influence has been detected on every continent. Changes in rainfall patterns — wetter regions of the world (mid to high latitudes in the northern hemisphere and tropical regions) are generally getting increasing rainfall, and drier regions less rainfall. Humidity — surface and satellite observations show moisture in the atmosphere has increased over the last 20-30 years. This increases the amount of water that can fall in extreme rainfall, posing flooding risks. Warming oceans — temperature increases have been observed over the last 50 years in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Ocean basins. These cannot be attributed to changes in solar activity, volcanic eruptions or variations in ocean currents, such as El Niño. Salinity — the Atlantic Ocean is becoming saltier in sub-tropical latitudes. This is because of increasing ocean evaporation due to increased temperatures. In the long-term, ocean regions at higher latitudes are expected to become less salty due to melting of glaciers, ice sheets and increased rainfall. Sea-ice — summer minimum of Arctic sea-ice is declining at a rate of 600,000 km² per decade, an area approximately the size of Madagascar. While there has been variation from year to year, a long-term trend has been observed that can only be explained by human influences. Antarctic — there has been a tiny increase in Antarctic sea ice extent since the satellite record began in 1978. This tiny change is consistent with the combined effects of greenhouse gas increases and reductions in the ozone layer which cause increases in some regions, such as the Ross Sea, and decreases in others, such as the Amundsen-Bellingshausen Sea. http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/corporate/pressoffice/2010/pr20100305.html Thoughts on this new research? I presume the Met Office is using the IPCC definition of 'very likely' - that being greater than 90% probability.

Open Question: What are your thoughts on the recent series of papers on solar effects on the global climate?

Benestad and Schmidt find "that the most likely contribution from solar forcing a global warming is 7 ± 1% for the 20th century and is negligible for warming since 1980." http://www.agu.org/pubs/crossref/2009/2008JD011639.shtml Lean finds "trends in solar irradiance in the past century contribute global warming of 10% or less." http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/cgi-bin/fulltext/123222295/PDFSTART?CRETRY=1&SRETRY=0 Calogovic et al. find "no response of global cloud cover to Forbush decreases at any altitude and latitude." In other words, galactic cosmic rays don't successfully seed clouds. http://www.eawag.ch/organisation/abteilungen/surf/publikationen/2010_calogovic.pdf Similarly, Kulmala et al. find "galactic cosmic rays appear to play a minor role for atmospheric aerosol formation events, and so for the connected aerosol-climate effects as well." http://www.atmos-chem-phys.net/10/1885/2010/acp-10-1885-2010.html Finally, Feulner and Rahmstorf address the potential impacts of a new Maunder Minimum, and find it would have a 0.3°C cooling effect by 2100, offsetting a tiny fraction of the projected global warming over the next century. http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2010/03/more-on-sun-climate-relations/ What are your thoughts on these results?
